SHUR-LINE Dream Bedroom Makeover: Behind the Scenes
A new bedroom for one lucky winner
Have all the shipments arrived? Do we have enough time? Are the lists complete? With a plan of action in place we approach the house to make the SHUR-LINE Dream Bedroom Makeover a reality.
The winner, Melanie, is a mother of four children and lives just North of Tampa, Florida. Our team cuts through the humidity of the South and converges on her home to find Melanie busy getting everyone ready for school and herself ready for work. After brief introductions and a tour of her bedroom, the family jets quickly out the door while the sun is just beginning to crest the horizon. Our immediate responsibility is to check inventory. ALMOST everything is accounted for and at first glance it all appears to be in one piece.
Focus quickly changes to getting the room painted, so the furniture needs to move out before the painters arrive! We quickly swing into action removing everything from floor to ceiling. It is early, the room is ready to paint and we feel like super heroes. After a quick recap of the plan, we double check our list and set out to find the last remaining items to transform the room.
The team breaks up into two groups. One group stays to make sure the painters arrive on time. The other group hits the local Lowe’s, a steadfast fixture for us over the next few days, quickly followed by stops at Sherwin Williams, Best Buy, Michael’s and/or any other craft store we can find.
Back at the house, the painters are doing what they do best. The walls are being rolled and corners are being cut with paint… the project’s quintessential foundation is well under way. As we wait for the paint to dry, we unpack the furniture and trouble shoot the “small” projects right off of our to-do list.
Then we realize…. You have to expect the unexpected! No matter how well you plan, how ahead of the game you are, it is always the little things that pop up at the most inopportune time.
While unpacking the TV in the 98º heat, not to mention the 1000% humidity, we quickly realize the TV has a broken edge! Composing our disappointment, we exchange a few choice words with their customer service department and plan a return trip to Best Buy. Then we move onto the bedroom furniture and though it is beautiful and new, it did not arrive unscathed from transport. Otherwise we are looking good and the puzzle pieces appear to be falling into place.
At the end of day 1, we were feeling confident over our small victories. Now we will return the TV on the way back to the hotel and grab a bite to eat. What will tomorrow bring? What could possibly go wrong?
Day 2…. teamwork at its best
The excitement of putting the dream bedroom together starts to kick in and the adrenaline is flowing. Shannon Kaye begins to execute her plan of transforming her blank canvas into a work of art. We all step back and watch a professional in her element.
Day two’s challenge de jour soon presents itself, when we discover the lounge chair that was ordered for the room was not only, not going to make it, but it was never shipped. This is when the power of the internet kicks into full gear. After a few searches and phone calls, we find a couch at a great designer furniture store and head out towards Tampa, but not before the team requests that we pick up a few additional items along the way. Now we are off…
We arrive at Bo Concepts and are promptly met by Lance our awesome sales associate that helped out beyond the call of duty. Lance and I quickly get the new couch loaded into the SUV. On to the next stop to pick up a gift for Melanie’s children and then head to yet another stop at Lowe’s.
Back at the house they begin to create a focal wall to frame Melanie’s new bed and side tables. They began by measuring and marking the area and then paint the edges using SHUR-LINE Pads and then fill in the rest of the area with SHUR-LINE Teflon Rollers. After the wall dries, Shannon applied organic graphic stencils to add life to the space. SHUR-LINE Foam Mini Rollers are a quick and easy solution to applying the paint to your stencil.
As finishing touches are going into the accent wall, we can wait no longer, the furniture needs to start going into the bedroom. The bed is the first priority. It goes together with little to no effort and looks amazing when placed in front of the accent wall. We step back in amazement as Shannon’s vision starts to come together.
We work into the night… Curtin rods are hung, TV mounted, lights hung, the level of detail Shannon puts into a room becomes evident. Shannon tells us we should break for the night. We are ahead of schedule and can be easily finish up the details tomorrow.
Day 3… how will it all end?
In order to bring a touch of antiquity into the space, Shannon refinishes a dresser that will complement Melanie’s dream bedroom. Shannon measures and marks the panels on the front of the dresser and applies a coat of primer to prepare the surface using a SHUR-LINE Mini Foam Roller. Shannon then applies two coats of black paint for the background using SHUR-LINE Bushes with Teflon Surface Protector before applying the stencil to the panel area. The stencil was applied in two offsetting coats of paint, one red and the other gold. Both of these colors were used on the accent wall in the bedroom. It was a well-planned and executed element that pulled the room together.
Last but not least, the final touches… pictures and decorations were hung, the furniture dusted, and the vacuum run. No detail was over looked as Melanie and her family descended upon their home with anticipation and excitement.
